SIFRIT WANTS A NEW TRIAL -

 A FORMER HOLLIDAYSBURG WOMAN CONVICTED OF MURDER  CHARGES IN THE DEATHS OF A 2 PEOPLE IN 2002 WANTS A NEW TRIAL. 34-YEAR-OLD ERICA SIFRIT SAYS HER FORMER COUNSEL DID NOT INVESTIGATE HER MENTAL CONDITION  OR POSSIBLE EFFECTS OF DRUGS SHE WAS USING AT THE TIME OF THE DOUBLE MURDER IN OCEAN CITY, MARYLAND.

ACCORDING TO THE “OCEAN CITY DISPATCH”, SIFRIT FILED A PETITION LAST WEEK TO OVERTURN HER PREVIOUS CONVICTIONS AND SENTENCE AND A BID FOR A NEW TRIAL

 

PROSECUTORS SAY PERJURY CHARGES ARE WARRANTED -

 Prosecutors have filed a document listing 33 statements made by two FORMER Penn State administrators that they say support perjury charges.  FORMER Athletic Director Tim Curley and FORMER vice president Gary Schultz are charged with lying to prosecutorS in the child molestation investigation of former coach Jerry Sandusky.  Lawyers say most of the statements involve downplaying the nature of incidents involving Sandusky.  Both men deny the charges.

 MISSING MAN LOCATED –

 A CENTRE COUNTY MAN WHO WAS REPORTED MISSING LAST MONTH HAS BEEN FOUND. STATE COLLEGE POLICE SAID YESTERDAY THAT 57-YEAR-OLD MICHAEL DIETZ OF COLLEGE TOWNSHIP CONTACTED A MEMBER OF HIS FAMILY OVER THE WEEKEND AND SAID HE WAS IN MARYLAND HEADING SOUTH. IN MARCH, POLICE REPORTED THAT DEITZ, FORMERLY OF MILESBURG, WALKED AWAY FROM HIS RESIDENCE ON FEBRUARY 27TH.

JURY SELECTION BEGINS IN RAPE CASE -

JURY SELECTION IS SCHEDULED TODAY FOR THE CENTRE COUNTY RAPE TRIAL OF 36 YEAR OLD IBNYASIN TALLEY OF PHILADELPHIA.HE’S CHARGED WITH RAPING A STATE COLLEGE WOMAN IN NOVEMBER. SHE TESTIFIED AT THE PRELIMINARY HEARING THAT SHE AGREED TO HAVE SEX WITH TALLEY, BUT CHANGED HER MIND AND HE REFUSED TO STOP.TALLEY’S PUBLIC DEFENDER DEBORAH LUX, TOLD THE JUDGE THERE’S A VIDEOTAPE… THE WOMAN HAS TATTOOED THE LETTERS “IBN” ON HERSELF …AND HAS VISITED TALLEY IN THE CENTRE COUNTY PRISON.

JULY SELECTION BEGINS FOR CENTRE COUNTY RE-TRIAL -

IN CENTRE COUNTY COURT TODAY, JURY SELECTION IS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN FOR THE RE-TRIAL OF FORMER PENN STATE STUDENT ANDREW ROGERS.ROGERS WAS CONVICTED OF 3RD DEGREE MURDER IN THE 2006 BEATING DEATH OF YOUNG-CHEOL PARK IN STATE COLLEGE.  THE CONVICTION WAS OVERTURNED BECAUSE PROSECUTORS WITHHELD INFORMATION THAT COULD HAVE BOLSTERED HIS DEFENSE. TESTIMONY IS SET TO BEGIN MAY 7TH.

BIKE RIDERS GET MORE ROOM ON THE ROAD -


BIG CHANGES START TODAY FOR DRIVERS SHARING THE ROAD WITH BIKE RIDERS.  A NEW STATE LAW REQUIRES DRIVERS TO STAY AT LEAST 4 FEET AWAY FROM A BICYCLIST WHILE PASSING.  DRIVERS WILL BE ABLE TO CROSS THE CENTER LINE IF OPPOSING TRAFFIC ALLOWS. DRIVERS TURNING LEFT MUST ALSO YIELD THE RIGHT-OF-WAY TO BICYCLISTS RIDING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION.

 INSURANCE CEO FIRED -

 The chief executive officer of Highmark is now unemployed after being charged with simple assault and defiant trespass. Kenneth Melani has been terminated for cause after assaulting the husband of an employee with whom he was having an affair.  Melani had originally been placed on unpaid leave.

ROADWORK AROUND CENTRAL PA -

REHABILITATION WORK GETS STARTED TODAY ON THE ROUTE 453/BIRMINGHAM PIKE BRIDGE IN BLAIR COUNTY AS THE CONTRACTOR BEGINS PRELIMINARY WORK TO SET TRAFFIC PATTERNS AT THE INTERSECTION OF ROUTES 453 AND 550 IN SNYDER TOWNSHIP. THE NEW TRAFFIC PATTERN WILL START NEXT MONDAY. MOTORISTS ARE REMINDED TO BE PATIENT AND USE CAUTION WHILE TRAVELING THROUGH THE WORK ZONE.

IN STATE COLLEGE THIS WEEK, CONSTRUCTION WORK ON THE WHITEHALL ROAD/UNIVERSITY DRIVE EXTENSION WILL INCLUDE REMOVAL OF THE CONCRETE ISLAND AT THE SOUTH ATHERTON STREET INTERSECTION. PENNDOT SAYS CREWS WILL ALSO BE CUTTING AND TRIMMING TREES NEAR THE RESEARCH DRIVE INTERSECTION AND FLAGGERS MAY BE ON DUTY BETWEEN 9A.M. AND 4 P.M.

IN JOHNSTOWN TODAY, A BARRIER WILL BE SET UP AT THE EAST CONEMAUGH END OF THE STRANK MEMORIAL BRIDGE ON ROUTE 271 TO REDUCE TRAFFIC TO ONE LANE WHILE ROADWAY WORK IS COMPLETED.
TRAFFIC WILL BE CONTROLLED BY TEMPORARY SIGNALS.ALSO IN EAST CONEMAUGH, GREEVE STREET WILL BE CLOSED AT THE INTERSECTION WITH ROUTE 271, AND CHESTNUT STREET WILL BE RESTRICTED TO ONE-WAY TRAFFIC. ACCESS TO ROUTE 271 WILL NOT BE PERMITTED. DELAYS IN THAT AREA SHOULD BE MINIMAL.

DAMS BEING DISMANTLED -

Dozens of dams in Western Pennsylvania are being dismantled.  American Rivers is tackling dams that were built more than a hundred years ago before Pennsylvania's dam construction regulations were established.  The environmental group said it is more cost-effective to destroy rather than restore the dams.  First on their agenda is Commodore Dam on Hinty Run in Indiana County.
