THE PITTSBURGH PIRATES CELEBRATED THEIR FIRST WINNING SEASON IN 21 YEARS…AND SEVERAL PLAYERS VISITED VETERANS AT ALTOONA’S VAN ZANDT V-A MEDICAL CENTER LAST THURSDAY. IT WAS PART OF THE TEAM’S NEWLY FORMED PIRATES CHARITIES CARE-A-VAN WHICH STOPPED IN 15 CITIES AND TOOK PART IN 25 COMMUNITY EVENTS. MAKING THE TRIP TO ALTOONA WERE FORMER CURVE PLAYERS JOSH HARRISON, TONY SANCHEZ, AND TONY WATSON…ALONG WITH COACH RICH SOFIELD AND BROADCASTER GREG BROWN.

and ABOUT 140 PEOPLE TOOK THE PLUNGE INTO ICY SAYERS LAKE IN HOWARD, CENTRE COUNTY RECENTLY. TEMPERATURES WERE AT ABOUT 30 DEGREES WHEN THEY JUMPED IN TO RAISE MONEY FOR THE CENTRE COUNTY YMCA’S OPEN DOORS PROGRAM. OFFICIALS SAY THEY RAISED AT LEAST $38,000 TO HELP THE Y MAKE RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO ALL FAMILIES, EVEN IF THEY CAN’T AFFORD A FULL MEMBERSHIP.
