SANDUSKY SCANDAL

A DAY AFTER PROSECUTORS ACKNOWLEDGED MISIDENTIFYING A DATE IN A KEY PIECE OF EVIDENCE IN THE JERRY SANDUSKY CASE, THEY ACCIDENTALLY IDENTIFIED A VICTIM. A DOCUMENT FILED IN COURT YESTERDAY IDENTIFIED "VICTIM ONE" AND MAY HAVE IDENTIFIED OTHER VICTIMS. JUDGE JOHN CLELAND ORDERED THE DOCUMENT SEALED. HE ALSO GRANTED THE PROSECUTION’S REQUEST TO CHANGE THE DATE OF MIKE MCQUEARY’S ALLEGATION THAT HE SAW SANDUSKY WITH A YOUNG BOY IN THE LASCH BUILDING SHOWERS. THE JUDGE REFUSED TO SEAL SEPARATE MOTIONS FILED BY THE STATE DEPARTMENTS OF PUBLIC WELFARE, CORRECTIONS, AND LABOR AND INDUSTRY. A HEARING ON OTHER MOTIONS IS SCHEDULED THIS AFTERNOON AT THE CENTRE COUNTY COURTHOUSE.

MEANWHILE, FORMER PENN STATE WIDE RECEIVERS COACH MIKE MCQUEARY IS FILING A WHISTLEBLOWER LAWSUIT AGAINST PENN STATE, BUT NO SPECIFICS HAVE BEEN RELEASED. MCQUEARY CLAIMS HE SAW JERRY SANDUSKY SEXUALLY ASSAULTING A BOY IN A PENN STATE SHOWER IN 2001.MCQUEARY WAS PLACED ON ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE IN NOVEMBER AND NOT RETAINED WHEN BILL O’BRIEN TOOK OVER THE FOOTBALL PROGRAM.

JAIL TIME FOR RIOTING STUDENT

STUDENTS RIOTED AFTER THE PENN STATE BOARD OF TRUSTEES FIRED JOE PATERNO LAST NOVEMBER…AND NOW 19 YEAR OLD VINENT MALIZIA OF PHILADELPHIA WILL SERVE JAIL TIME FOR TIPPING OVER A NEWS VAN. UNDER A PLEA DEAL, THE JUDGE SENTENCED HIM TO 30 DAYS TO 23-AND-A-HALF MONTHS IN THE CENTRE COUNTY PRISON. MALIZIA…WHO IS TRANSFERRING TO TEMPLE…MUST PAY RESTITUTION OF ALMOST 49-THOUSAND DOLLARS.

HAZING INVESTIGATION CONTINUES

THE CENTRE DAILY TIMES REPORTS THAT A PENN STATE EMPLOYEE RESIGNED AND SEVERAL STUDENTS WERE HELD FROM SPRING GRADUATION DUE TO THE ON-GOING INVESTIGATIONS INTO ALLEGED HAZING ON CAMPUS. AARON HOLLOMAN, RESIDENT LIFE COORDINATOR AT PENNYPACKER HALL, STEPPED DOWN EFFECTIVE MONDAY. DURING SPRING BREAK, POLICE FOUND 10 MEN IN HOLLOMAN’S UNLOCKED ROOM ENGAGED IN SUSPECTED HAZING ACTIVITY. A FEMALE FRESHMAN CLAIMS SHE WAS BADLY INJURED IN A SEPARATE HAZING INCIDENT INVOLVING A LITTLE SISTERS GROUP WITH THE OMEGA PSI PHY FRATERNITY. AND ANOTHER FEMALE SAYS SHE WAS HARASSED AND EXPOSED TO HAZING BY MEMBERS OF A SORORITY BETWEEN JANUARY AND FEBRUARY. NO CHARGES HAVE BEEN FILED SO FAR.

PRISONER’S DEATH UNDER INVESTIGATION

32 YEAR OLD JOHN CARTER OF PITTSBURGH DIED AT THE STATE PRISON AT ROCKVIEW IN LATE APRIL…NOW THE CENTRE COUNTY CORONER’S OFFICE IS INVESTIGATING THE CASE AFTER THE HUMAN RIGHTS COALITION CALLED IT A POSSIBLE HOMICIDE AT THE HANDS OF CORRECTIONS OFFICERS. THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THAT ANOTHER INMATE CLAIMS THE OFFICERS USED PEPPER SPRAY ON CARTER AT LEAST 10 TIMES AND ELECTRO-SHOCK WEAPONS AT LEAST 7 TIMES. TOXICOLOGY TESTS WILL TAKE 3 TO 4 WEEKS. CARTER WAS SERVING LIFE FOR A MURDER THAT TOOK PLACE WHEN HE WAS 17.

SENTENCED FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER

A CAMBRIA COUNTY JUDGE YESTERDAY SENTENCED 32 YEAR OLD COLIN PATTERSON OF PHILADELPHIA TO 10 TO 20 YEARS IN A STATE PRISON. PATTERSON PLEADED GUILTY TO ATTEMPTED HOMICIDE AND OTHER CHARGES FOLLOWING A NOVEMBER HOME INVASION IN JOHNSTOWN. THE HOMEOWNER, JOHN ANDREWS, WAS SHOT SEVERAL TIMES.

FATAL WRECK NEAR STATE COLLEGE

ONE MAN IS DEAD AFTER A HEAD-ON COLLSION ON I-99 NEAR GRAYS WOODS IN CENTRE COUNTY TUESDAY AFTERNOON. STATE POLICE SAY 68 YEAR OLD EARL RIPKA JUNIOR OF STATE COLLEGE WAS SOUTHBOUND WHEN HE PERFORMED A U-TURN...THEN TRAVELLED NORTHBOUND IN THE SOUTHBOUND LANE COLLIDING WITH A PICKUP TRUCK DRIVEN BY MITCHELL KOPTCHAK OF PHILIPSBURG. RIPKA WAS NOT WEARING A SEATBELT AND DIED AT THE SCENE. KOPTCHAK HAD JUST MINOR INJURIES.

DAY IN COURT FOR ACCUSED ROBBER

19 YEAR OLD RICHARD MARTINEZ OF STATE COLLEGE IS DUE AT A PRELIMINARY HEARING TODAY ON 4 FELONY COUNTS OF ROBBERY. SPRING TOWNSHIP POLICE SAY HE ROBBED, KICKED, AND THREATENED TO KILL 4 TEENAGE BOYS WHILE THEY WERE HIKING SATURDAY ON CENTRE HALL MOUNTAIN. HE PUT A BOX CUTTER TO ONE BOY’S THROAT. POLICE AREN’T SURE WHY MARTINEZ WAS ON THE MOUNTAIN, BUT IT HAPPENED IN AN AREA WHERE MARIJUANA WAS BEING GROWN. BAIL IS SET AT 75-THOUSAND DOLLARS.

JOHNSTOWN SQUADRON ON THE CHOPPING BLOCK

THE 258TH AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL SQUADRON IS SLATED FOR CLOSURE IN JOHNSTOWN, BUT U-S SENATOR BOB CASEY AND CONGRESSMAN MARK CRITZ AND TIM MURPHY HAVE SENT A LETTER TO DEFENSE SECRETARY LEON PANETTA AND TRANSPORTATION SECRETARY RAY LAHOOD. THE LAWMAKERS CLOSING THE SQUADRON COULD REDUCE THE SAFETY AND EFFICIENCY OF AIRSPACE OVER WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA. THE UNIT TRACKS WEATHER, CONTROLS MILITARY AIRCRAFT, AND TRAINS MILITARY RADAR OPERATORS. IT’S BEEN AT THE CAMBRIA COUNTY AIRPORT SINCE 1998 AND IS AND CURRENTLY HOME TO 97 AIR NATIONAL GUARD RESERVISTS.

RETURNING SOLDIER SURPRISES HIS SON AT SCHOOL

ARMY INFANTRY CAPTAIN JOSEPH PAZCOGUIN HAS BEEN DEPLOYED IN AFGHANISTAN FOR A YEAR, BUT YESTERDAY HE SURPRISED HIS SON AT SCHOOL. 6 YEAR OLD AIDEN PAZCOGUIN IS IN KINDERGARTEN AT ST. ROSE OF LIMA IN ALTOONA. AIDEN’S MOM ARRANGED THE SURPRISE WITH THE PRINCIPAL AND HIS GRANDPARENTS WERE THERE TOO.

BRIDGE WILL HONOR CLEARFIELD COUNTY 9/11 HERO

MARY ELLEN TIESI, A CLEARFIELD COUNTY NATIVE, DIED ON 9/11 WHEN THE WORLD TRADE CENTER SOUTH TOWER COLLAPSED…AND NOW THE IRVONA BRIDGE CARRYING STATE ROUTE 53 OVER CLEARFIELD CREEK WILL BE RE-NAMED IN HER HONOR. GOVERNOR TOM CORBETT SIGNED THE MEASURE INTO LAW YESTERDAY AND A DEDICATION CEREMONY IS TENTATIVELY SET FOR MAY 26TH.
