PA PRIMARY IN TUESDAY’S PRIMARY ELECTION, BUSINESSMAN TOM WOLF WON THE DEMOCRATIC RACE FOR GOVERNOR AND HE WILL CHALLENGE REPUBLICAN INCUMBENT TOM CORBETT IN THE NOVEMBER GENERAL ELECTION.

STATE SENATOR MIKE STACK OF PHILADELPHIA IS THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE FOR LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR. HE DEFEATED FORMER CONGRESSMAN MARK CRITZ OF JOHNSTOWN AND 3 OTHER CANDIDATES.

CONGRESSMAN BILL SHUSTER WON THE REPUBLICAN PRIMARY IN THE 9TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT, DEFEATING ART HALVORSON AND TRAVIS SCHOOLEY. SHUSTER WILL FACE DEMOCRAT ALANA HARTZOCK FROM FRANKLIN COUNTY IN NOVEMBER.

12TH DISTRICT GOP CONGRESSMAN KEITH ROTHFUS WILL BE CHALLENGED BY DEMOCRATIC NEWCOMER ERIN MCCLELLAND THIS FALL. SHE BEAT JOHN HUGYA WITH APPROXIMATELY 2-THIRDS OF THE VOTE.

IN THE 5TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT, REPUBLICAN INCUMBENT GLENN THOMPSON WILL BE CHALLENGED BY KERITH STRANO TAYLOR.

FOR THE 71ST DISTRICT STATE HOUSE SEAT, INCUMBENT DEMOCRAT BRYAN BARBIN WILL TAKE ON REPUBLICAN CHALLENGER JIM RIGBY FOR A 3RD TIME. BARBIN WAS UNOPPOSED FOR HIS PARTY’S NOMINATION AND RIGBY DEFEATED MARK AMSDELL.

IN THE SIGNIFICANTLY RECONSTRUCTED 72ND DISTRICT, INCUMBENT DEMOCRAT FRANK BURNS WILL FACE REPUBLICAN CHALLENGER PHILIP RICE IN NOVEMBER.

REPUBLICAN STATE REPRESENTATIVE MIKE FLECK WAS UNOPPOSED ON THE BALLOT FOR THE 81ST DISTRICT, BUT HE FACED A WRITE IN CAMPAIGN FROM HUNTINGDON COUNTY TREASURER RICHARD IRVIN. THOSE VOTES HAVE NOT YET BEEN TABULATED.

IN THE 80TH DISTRICT STATE HOUSE RACE, REPUBLICAN VOTERS SELECTED JUDY WARD TO REPLACE THE RETIRING JERRY STERN. SHE COULD FACE INDEPENDENT JASON LYNN IN THE FALL.

NEW 78TH DISTRICT STATE REPRESENTATIVE JESSE TOPPER WON THE REPUBLICAN PRIMARY. HE REPLACED THE LATE DICK HESS.

ABOUT 23 PERCENT OF BLAIR COUNTY’S REGISTERED REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS WENT TO THE POLLS.

SAME-SEX MARRIAGE RULING

IN PITTSBURGH YESTERDAY, U-S DISTRICT JUDGE JOHN JONES OVERTURNED PENNSYLVANIA’S 1996 LAW BANNING SAME SEX MARRIAGE. HIS OPINION SAYS “PENNSYLVANIA’S MARRIAGE LAWS VIOLATE BOTH THE DUE PROCESS AND EQUAL PROTECTION CLAUSES OF THE 14TH AMENDMENT TO THE UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION.” HE ALSO SAYS “SAME-SEX COUPLES WHO SEEK TO MARRY IN PENNSYLVANIA MAY DO SO, AND ALREADY MARRIED SAME-SEX COUPLES WILL BE RECOGNIZED IN THE COMMONWEALTH.” PENNSYLVANIA IS NOW THE 19TH STATE TO PERMIT SAME-SEX MARRIAGES. LAWSUITS ARE EXPECTED. ATTORNEY GENERAL KATHLEEN KANE SAYS THAT THE CONSTITUTION HAS PREVAILED IN PENNSYLVANIA.

HIGH SCHOOL RENOVATIONS

VOTERS IN THE STATE COLLEGE SCHOOL DISTRICT OVERWHELMING APPROVED A REFERENDUM TO RAISE TAXES TO PAY FOR 85 MILLION DOLLARS WORTH OF RENOVATIONS AT THE HIGH SCHOOL. OFFICIALS ESTIMATES PROPERTY TAXES FOR THE AVERAGE HOMEOWNER WILL GO UP ABOUT 190 DOLLARS PER YEAR. THE BOARD HOPES THE WORK WILL BE COMPLETED BY 2018.

BEDFORD COUNTY WOMAN KILLED

A DEADLY WRECK ABOUT 6:45 YESTERDAY MORNING IN WEST PROVIDENCE TOWNSHIP, BEDFORD COUNTY. STATE POLICE SAY 55-YEAR-OLD MARY CLARK OF CLEARVILLE RAN OFF CLEAR RIDGE ROAD…STRUCK A FENCE…AND HER VEHICLE WENT AIRBORNE AND ROLLED OVER.

HAZMAT SPILL

STATE ENVIRONMENTAL OFFICIALS TELL THE CENTRE DAILY TIMES THAT MONDAY’S CHEMICAL SPILL ALONG ROUTE 322 IN POTTERS MILLS WAS WORSE THAN THEY REALIZED. ABOUT 100 GALLONS OF THE SPILLED HERBICIDE REACHED NEARBY POTTER RUN AND CAUSED A FISH KILL THAT STRETCHED ALMOST 6 MILES. THE WATERWAY IS NOT A SOURCE OF PUBLIC DRINKING WATER.

INMATE GUILTY OF RAPE

AFTER A ONE DAY TRIAL, A CENTRE COUNTY JURY LAST NIGHT FOUND FORMER S-C-I ROCKVIEW INMATE OMAR BEST GUILTY OF RAPING, BEATING, AND STRANGLING A CLERICAL WORKER…LEAVING HER FOR DEAD…LAST JULY. BEST TESTIFIED THAT THE SEX WAS CONSENSUAL. HIS SENTENCING HAS NOT YET BEEN SCHEDULED. THE VICTIM TOLD AUTHORITIES SHE HAD PREVIOUSLY REPORTED TO HER SUPERIORS THAT BEST “CREEPED HER OUT.” SHE CLAIMS SHE SOUNDED AN EMERGENCY WHISTLE, BUT NO HELP CAME.

BOMB THREAT SUSPECT’S HEARING DELAYED

THE PRELIMINARY HEARING FOR STEPHEN JABLONSKI OF JOHNSTOWN HAS BEEN CONTINUED UNTIL JUNE 24TH. HE’S CHARGED WITH PHONING A BOMB THREAT INTO THE CAMBRIA COUNTY COURTHOUSE BACK IN APRIL. HE TOLD POLICE HE DIDN’T WANT HIS GIRLFRIEND TO FAIL A DRUG TEST WHEN SHE APPEARED AT A HEARING. VIDEO SURVEILLANCE SHOWS JABLONSKI BUYING A PHONE. THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE SAYS THE PHONE WAS NEVER FOUND BUT THEY HAVE THE BOX IT CAME IN. THAT IS THE PHONE PROSECUTORS BELIEVE JABLONSKI USED TO MAKE THE 911 CALL.

ANOTHER RECALL FOR G-M

GENERAL MOTORS IS RECALLING ANOTHER 2-POINT-4 MILLION VEHICLES IN THE U-S. THE COUNTY’S TOP AUTOMAKER ALSO SAYS IT IS DOUBLING THE CHARGE IT EXPECTS TO TAKE IN THE SECOND QUARTER RELATED TO RECALL REPAIRS TO AROUND 400-MILLION DOLLARS. SO FAR THIS YEAR, GM HAS RECALLED OVER 15-MILLION CARS AND TRUCKS. THAT INCLUDES MORE THAN 2-AND-A-HALF-MILLION TO REPLACE FAULTY IGNITION SWITCHES THAT HAVE BEEN LINKED TO MORE THAN A DOZEN DEATHS.
