HOTEL FIRE WAS SET

BELLEFONTE POLICE CHIEF SHAWN WEAVER SAYS THE SEPTEMBER FIRE THAT DESTROYED THE HOTEL DO-DEE AND DAMAGED 2 OTHER HISTORIC BUILDINGS IN DOWNTOWN BELLEFONTE WAS A CASE OF ARSON. WEAVER SPOKE TO BORO COUNCIL LAST NIGHT, BUT DID NOT COMMENT IF JEFFERY KARG IS A SUSPECT. HE WAS ARRESTED IN CONNECTION WITH A SUSPECTED ARSON AT A NEARBY MATTRESS WAREHOUSE LAST WEEK.

EMERGENCY LANDING

NO INJURIES YESTERDAY AFTERNOON WHEN A SMALL COMMERCIAL PLANE WAS FORCED TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY LANDING AT UNIVERSITY PARK AIRPORT. PENN STATE OFFICIALS SAY THE US AIRWAYS EXPRESS FLIGHT WAS TRAVELING FROM BUFFALO NEW YORK TO PHILADELPHIA WHEN AN INDICATOR LIGHT ON THE COCKPIT CONTROL PANEL CAME ON AND SMOKE WAS SEEN OUTSIDE THE PLANE. THE SMOKE ORIGINATED IN THE LAVATORY AND WAS LIKELY CAUSED BY AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE. THERE WERE 6 PEOPLE ON BOARD…5 CREW MEMBERS AND ONE PASSENGER.

MURDER TRIAL GETTING UNDERWAY

20 YEAR OLD FATIMA GHOUL OF STATE COLLEGE PLEADED GUILTY YESTERDAY TO DRUG AND ROBBERY CHARGES AND IS FACING AT LEAST 4 YEARS IN JAIL. BACK IN JANUARY, HER BOYFRIEND TYLER MARLETT ALLEGEDLY STABBED 20 YEAR OLD TYLER STRUBLE AT HIS LEMONT HOME FOLLOWING A MARIJUANA DEAL THAT WENT WRONG. MARLATT’S MURDER TRIAL IS SET TO BEGIN THIS WEEK.

DEER & DOGS ARE DEAD

SOMERSET COUNTY AUTHORITIES SAY 2 DOGS AND 3 DEER ARE DEAD AFTER A WEEKEND INCIDENT. ENRICO SIDONE TELLS WTAJ THAT BERYL AND ANGELA GEARY ALLOWED THEIR 2 DOGS TO GET INTO HIS FATHER’S DEER PEN. SIDONE CALLED THE POLICE AND THEY TOLD HIM TO SHOOT THE DOGS BECAUSE THEY WERE ATTACKING THE DEER. THE GEARYS THEN FOUGHT SIDONE AND HIS BROTHER DUKE. THEY ARE CHARGED WITH AGRICULTURE VANDALISM, ASSAULT, AND OTHER OFFENSES. THEIR FIRST COURT APPEARANCE IS NEXT TUESDAY.

LOCAL LAWYER ARRESTED

A FORMER CENTRE COUNTY ASSISTANT DISTRICT ATTORNEY IS FACING CHARGES FOR ALLEGEDLY RECEIVING AND SELLING MARIJUANA AND HYDROCODONE THAT WAS SHIPPED TO THE LAW OFFICE WHERE HE WORKED FROM CALIFORNIA .
STATE COLLEGE POLICE ARRESTED 53 YEAR OLD STEVEN SLOANE MONDAY ON 8 FELONY COUNTS RELATED TO AN OCTOBER 2011 INVESTIGATION. A PARTNER AT MASORTI & SULLIVAN LAW OFFICE SAYS SLOANE WAS FIRED SHORTLY AFTER THE INVESTIGATION BEGAN.

WOMAN PLEADS GUILTY FOLLOWING DRUG STING

IN BLAIR COUNTY COURT MONDAY, 43 YEAR OLD TRACEY PINER OF ALTOONA PLEADED GUILTY TO DRUG CHARGES. SHE WAS ARRESTED AS PART OF A MAJOR STING CALLED “OPERATION LAST CALL” LAST YEAR. PINER IS FACING 5 TO 10 YEARS IN PRISON. HER BROTHER, KENNETH, ALSO PLEADED GUILTY AND IS SERVING 19 TO 38 YEARS. DANNY TALLIE OF ALTOONA IS DOING 4 TO 8 YEARS. ONE OF THE ALLEGED RINGLEADERS, BALTIMORE NATIVE DAMION FLOYD, IS AWAITING TRIAL.

DECISION ON VOTER I-D LAW

A JUDGE MUST DECIDE TODAY WHETHER PENNSYLVANIA’S TOUGH VOTER I-D LAW CAN REMAIN INTACT. THE STATE SUPREME COURT SAYS IT’S UP TO JUDGE ROBERT SIMPSON TO DETERMINE IF VOTERS CANNOT GET EASY ACCESS TO I-D CARDS OR IF VOTERS WILL BE DIS-ENFRANCHISED. THE LAW IS SET TO TAKE EFFECT WITH THE NOVEMBER PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.

ALTOONA’S DISTRESSED STATUS

ALTOONA CITY COUNCIL HAS EXPRESSED CONCERNS THAT THE ACT 47 PLAN IS BEHIND SCHEDULE AND IT’S GETTING TOO LATE TO HELP WITH THE 2013 BUDGET PROCESS. THE FINANICIAL DISTRESS COORDINATOR FROM THE FIRM STEVENS & LEE HAS RELEASED SPECIFIC DATES, SAYING HE MUST FILE A RECOVERY PLAN ON NOVEMBER 13TH AND HOLD A PUBLIC HEARING ON THE 28TH. CITY COUNCIL IS SLATED TO ADOPT THE PLAN ON DECEMBER 19TH.  3 CITY OFFICIALS TELL THE ALTOONA MIRROR THE SCHEDULE WILL BE TIGHT.

POPCORN RECALL

GIANT AND MARTINS FOOD MARKETS HAVE RECALLED READY-TO-EAT BAGS OF INDIANA WHITE CHEDDAR POPCORN DUE TO POSSIBLE LISTERIA CONTAMINATION. NO ILLNESSES HAVE BEEN REPORTED TO DATE, BUT CUSTOMERS WHO HAVE PURCHASED THE PRODUCT SHOULD DISCARD ANY UNUSED PORTIONS AND BRING THEIR PURCHASE RECEIPT FOR A REFUND.

SAFETY ISSUES LEAD TO HIGH SCHOOL BLEACHER CLOSURE

A SINKHOLE IS FORCING THE STATE COLLEGE SCHOOL DISTRICT TO CLOSE MOST OF THE BLEACHERS AT MEMORIAL FIELD. RECENT GEO-TECHNICAL STUDIES SHOW THE HOME BLEACHERS ON THE EAST SIDE SIT ON UNSTABLE GROUND. STATE HIGH IS SCHEDULED TO HOST A FOOTBAL GAME THIS FRIDAY NIGHT AND THE PLAYING SURFACE AND WEST BLEACHERS WILL REMAIN OPEN. THE SCHOOL BOARD WILL RECEIVE THE FULL REPORT AT THEIR MEETING MONDAY.

POST HIGH SCHOOL OPPORTUNITY FAIR

REPRESENTATIVES FROM 80 SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES WILL TAKE PART IN THE ANNUAL POST HIGH SCHOOL OPPORTUNITY FAIR IN THE ALTOONA HIGH SCHOOL FIELD HOUSE TODAY AND TOMORROW. PARENTS NIGHT IS THIS EVENING FROM 6 TO 8 AND IS OPEN TO PARENTS AND STUDENTS FROM ALL LOCAL HIGH SCHOOLS. TOMORROW, MORE THAN 2-THOUSAND STUDENTS FROM ALTOONA AND OTHER LOCAL HIGH SCHOOLS WILL ATTEND.
