STORM RECOVERY

SOME VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS AND AMBULANCE CREWS FROM BLAIR AND CAMBRIA COUNTIES ARE HEADED TO THE NEW JERSEY SHORE TO HELP IN RECOVERY EFFORTS FOLLOWING HURRICANE SANDY. CENTRE LIFELINK SENT 4 E-M-TS AND PARAMEDICS TO OCEAN CITY AND NEARLY 35 AMBULANCES FROM PENNSYLVANIA HAVE BEEN DEPLOYED TO ASSIST WITH 911 CALLS AND AID IN SEARCH AND RESCUE EFFORTS. AT LEAST 72 DEATHS HAVE BEEN BLAMED ON THE STORM, INCLUDING 11 IN PENNSYLVANIA. IN OUR STATE, IT’S ESTIMATED THAT 850-THOUSAND PEOPLE STILL DON’T HAVE ELECTRICITY. LOCAL CREWS HAVE BEEN GETTING THE POWER BACK ON IN OUR AREA AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE.

SANDUSKY SCANDAL

THE PITTSBURGH POST GAZETTE REPORTS THAT FORMER PENN STATE PRESIDENT GRAHAM SPANIER WILL BE CHARGED TODAY IN CONNECTION WITH THE JERRY SANDUSKY SCANDAL. STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL LINDA KELLY WILL REPORTEDLY FILE PERJURY AND OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE CHARGES. SPANIER DENIES ANY KNOWLEDGE OF SANDUSKY’S ABUSE OF CHILDREN, BUT THE FREEH REPORT CONCLUDED THAT HE AND OTHER TOP UNIVERSITY OFFICIALS CONSPIRED TO COVER IT UP.

THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS ANNOUNCED YESTERDAY THAT JERRY SANDUSKY IS NOW AT THE PRISON WHERE HE WILL SERVE HIS 30 TO 60 YEAR PRISON SENTENCE. SANDUSKY HAS BEEN TRANSFERRED TO THE STATE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION AT GREENE, IN WAYNESBURG, ABOUT 3-AND-A-HALF HOURS FROM STATE COLLEGE. CORRECTIONS SECRETARY JOHN WETZEL SAYS THE FORMER COACH IS CONSIDERED VULNERABLE SO HE HAS BEEN PLACED IN PROTECTIVE CUSTODY TO ENSURE HIS SAFETY. THAT MEANS SANDUSKY WILL BE IN A SINGLE CELL AND ALWAYS GET ADDITIONAL SUPERVISION AND ESCORT WHENEVER HE LEAVES IT. HE’LL BE OFFERED ONE HOUR OF INDIVIDUAL EXERCISE PER DAY, 5 DAYS A WEEK…AND SHOWERS, 3 TIMES A WEEK. ALL MEALS WILL BE EATEN IN THE CELL. HE WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO HAVE PHYSICAL CONTACT WITH ANY VISITORS.

LOCAL SAILOR DIES IN JAPAN

THE NAVY AND JAPANESE AUTHORITIES ARE INVESTIGATING THE DEATH OF A 25-YEAR-OLD OFFICER FROM JOHNSTOWN. PETTY OFFICER 2ND CLASS SAMUEL STILES WAS FOUND DEAD SUNDAY AT A JAPANESE TRAIN STATION NOT FAR FROM WHERE HE WAS STATIONED IN NAGASAKI. JAPANESE MEDIA REPORTED STILES WAS BELIEVED TO BE CLIMBING ON TOP OF A TRAIN WHEN HE WAS SHOCKED BY AN OVERHEAD POWER LINE, FELL AND HIT HIS HEAD. SEVERAL ALCOHOLIC-BEVERAGE CONTAINERS WERE REPORTEDLY FOUND NEAR HIS BODY. THE DEATH IS BEING INVESTIGATED AS EITHER AN ACCIDENT OR A CRIME.

BABY’S DEATH IS UNDER INVESTIGATION IN CENTRE COUNTY.
 
THE 6-MONTH-OLD WAS FOUND IN BED, UNCONSCIOUS AND NOT BREATHING, AT A HOME IN MADISONBURG, ON TUESDAY. FAMILY AND FIRST RESPONDERS TRIED CPR UNTIL THE INFANT WAS TAKEN TO MOUNT NITTANY MEDICAL CENTER WHERE HE WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD. AN AUTOPSY IS BEING DONE BY THE CORONER TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF DEATH.

FATHER WILL STAND TRIAL

20 YEAR OLD CARL HARRIS OF JOHNSTOWN WAIVED HIS PRELIMINARY HEARING YESTERDAY AND WILL STAND TRIAL FOR ALLEGEDLY BREAKING THE LEG OF HIS 8 WEEK OLD SON. JOHNSTOWN POLICE SAY HARRIS HE WAS UPSET BY THE BOY’S CRYING BACK IN AUGUST AND HE PRESSED DOWN ON THE BABY'S LEG UNTIL IT BROKE. HARRIS IS CHARGED WITH AGGRAVATED ASSAULT AND ENDANGERING THE WELFARE OF A CHILD. HE REMAINS IN THE CAMBRIA COUNTY PRISON.

CHEERLEADER RECOVERING

A FAMILY SPOKESPERSON SAYS PENN STATE CHEERLEADER PAIGE RAQUE HAS BEEN RELEASED FROM THE INTENSIVE CARE UNIT AND IS NOW IN REHAB, SHOWING SIGNS OF RECOVERY. THE 19-YEAR-OLD FEMALE FELL 5 STORIES FROM A STATE COLLEGE APARTMENT COMPLEX WINDOW LAST MONTH AND SUFFERED SEVERE HEAD INJURIES, A BROKEN PELVIS AND A BROKEN RIB. POLICE HAVE RULED THE FALL ACCIDENTAL, BUT THE CASE IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION. RAQUE REMAINS ON A FEEDING TUBE AND SHE HAS SMILED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. FRIENDS HAVE BEEN SELLING #PRAYFORPAIGE SHIRTS AND BRACELETS WITH THE MONEY GOING TO COVER HOSPITAL BILLS.

SERIOUSLY INJURED

DONALD LOSCH OF COBURN SUFFERED SERIOUS HEAD AND CHEST INJURIES YESTERDAY WHEN HIS CAR CRASHED IN HAINES TOWNSHIP, CENTRE COUNTY. STATE POLICE AT ROCKVIEW SAY LOSCH WAS TRAVELING AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED ON LONG LANE WHEN HE LOST CONTROL OF HIS CAR ON THE WET ROADWAY. THE VEHICLE SLID INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC AND STRUCK AN S-U-V DRIVEN BY MICHAEL CAMPBELL OF PHILIPSBURG. CAMPBELL HAD MODERATE INJURIES.
