SANDUSKY SCANDAL

SENIOR JUDGE JOHN CLELAND PLANS TO RULE SOON ON WHETHER THE SANDUSKY SUBPOENAS SENT TO VARIOUS SCHOOL DISTRICTS, THE SECOND MILE, AND VARIOUS STATE DEPARTMENTS SHOULD BE QUASHED. IT’S EXPECTED THAT HE WILL LET THE SUBPOENAS STAND, BUT REDACT SOME INFORMATION THE DEFENSE WANTS. SOME OF SUBPOENAED AGENCIES SAY INFORMATION ABOUT THE ALLEGED ACCUSERS SHOULD BE KEPT CONFIDENTIAL. THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR VICTIMS OF CRIME FILED A MOTION TO HAVE ALL THE SUBPOENAS VOIDED, BUT THE JUDGE SAID NO. SANDUSKY IS TO GO ON TRIAL NEXT MONTH, BUT DEFENSE ATTORNEY JOE AMENDOLA IS ALSO ASKING FOR A DELAY. HE FILED AN ADDITIONAL MOTION YESTERDAY ASKING THAT THE COMPLETE GRAND JURY TRANSCRIPTS BE RELEASED TO HIM IMMEDIATELY.

VICTIM SAYS WOMAN CLUBBED HIM

A DISTRICT JUDGE YESTERDAY ORDERED 54 YEAR OLD SANDRA MILLER OF ALTOONA TO STAND TRIAL FOR ALLEGEDLY BEATING AND ROBBING A 76-YEAR OLD MAN LAST MONTH AT HIS 6TH AVENUE HOME. THE VICTIM TESTIFIED THAT MILLER GRABBED AN OBJECT AND BEAT HIM REPEATEDLY OVER THE HEAD. WHEN HE WOKE UP, ABOUT 15-HUNDRED DOLLARS IN CASH WAS GONE FROM HIS WALLET. THE MAN SPENT SEVERAL DAYS IN THE HOSPITAL WITH A FRACTURED SKULL, BLEEDING ON THE BRAIN, AND BROKEN FACIAL BONES. THE JUDGE REFUSED TO LOWER MILLER’S 35-THOUSAND DOLLAR BOND.

ACCUSED ROBBER WILL STAND TRIAL

19 YEAR OLD RICHARD MARTINEZ OF STATE COLLEGE WAIVED HIS PRELIMINARY HEARING YESTERDAY ON 4 COUNTS OF ROBBERY, AGGRAVATED ASSAULT, AND OTHER OFFENSES. POLICE SAY HE ROBBED 4 TEENAGE BOYS LAST SATURDAY WHILE THEY WERE HIKING ON CENTRE HALL MOUNTAIN. MARTINEZ ALLEGEDLY KICKED ONE OF THE BOYS IN THE HEAD AND HELD A BOX CUTTER TO HIS THROAT. MARTINEZ REMAINS IN THE CENTRE COUNTY PRISON.

FEMALE BANK ROBBER STRIKES AGAIN

A BLONDE WOMAN IN HER 20’S, WEARING A BASEBALL CAP ROBBED FIRST UNITED BANK AND TRUST IN FRIENDSVILLE, MARYLAND ON MONDAY…AND POLICE THINK IT’S THE SAME WOMAN WHO HELD UP FIRST SUMMIT BANK IN ADAMS TOWNSHIP, CAMBRIA COUNTY, LAST WEEK. THE SAME WOMAN IS BELIEVED TO HAVE TRIED TO ROB M & T BANK IN TYRONE LAST WEEK AS WELL. CRIMESTOPPERS IS OFFERING A REWARD OF UP TO 1-THOUSAND DOLLARS IN CASH.

$240,000 STOLEN FROM WALMART?

38 YEAR OLD EILEEN ZIMMERMAN IS ACCUSED OF STEALING MORE THAN 240-THOUSAND DOLLARS FROM THE WAL-MART STORE IN BLAIRSVILLE, INDIANA COUNTY, SINCE 2010. STATE POLICE SAY ZIMMERMAN GOT AWAY WITH ABOUT 56-GRAND JUST SINCE FEBRUARY. SURVEILLANCE VIDEO SHOWS HER BRINGING COUPONS FROM HOME AND TRADING THEM FOR CASH. ZIMMERMAN IS OUT ON BOND.

LAWMAKERS WORKING ON BUDGET

THE STATE SENATE YESTERDAY APPROVED A 27-POINT-7 BILLION DOLLAR BUDGET THAT RESTORES GOVERNOR TOM CORBETT’S PROPOSED CUTS TO EDUCATION AND SOCIAL SERVICES. AFTER 3 STRAIGHT MONTHS OF ABOVE-AVERAGE REVENUES, SENATE REPUBLICANS LEADER DOMINIC PILEGGI SAYS THE BILL USES THE MONEY TO MAINTAIN SPENDING AT ITS CURRENT LEVELS IN CRITICAL AREAS, SUCH AS HIGHER EDUCATION. THE BILL COULD FACE CHALLENGES IN TALKS WITH CORBETT AND HOUSE LEADERS. THE STATE BUDGET MUST BE IN PLACE BY JULY 1ST.

70 MILES PER HOUR?

A BILL THAT WOULD RAISE THE SPEED LIMIT ON CERTAIN SECTIONS OF THE PENNSYLVANIA TURNPIKE TO 70 MILES PER HOUR IS ON ITS WAY TO THE HOUSE FOR CONSIDERATION AFTER BEING APPROVED THIS WEEK BY THE HOUSE TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE. COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN REPRESENTATIVE RICK GEIST SAYS THE SPEED INCREASE WOULD ATTRACT MORE DRIVERS TO THE TURNPIKE.

THAT INCLUDES NEARLY 22-THOUSAND PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOLS IN 49 STATES AND WASHINGTON D-C. 78-PERCENT OF HOLLIDAYSBURG’S 901 STUDENTS SCORED PROFICIENTLY ON STATE ASSESSMENTS FOR MATH…AND 80 PERCENT SCORED PROFICIENTLY FOR READING. ABOUT A QUARTER OF HOLLIDAYSBURG STUDENTS WERE TESTED FOR ADVANCED PLACEMENT CLASSES.
