STATE MAY HANDLE PRIEST’S PROSECUTION

4 MEN NOW CLAIM THEY WERE SEXUALLY MOLESTED BY FATHER GEORGE KOHARCHIK WHEN THEY WERE BOYS IN CAMBRIA AND OTHER COUNTIES, AND THE TRIBUNE DEMOCRAT REPORTS THAT THE INVESTIGATION AND CRIMINAL PROSECUTION MAY BE HANDLED BY THE OFFICE OF THE STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL DUE TO JURISDICTIONAL ISSUES. THE ALLEGED ABUSE BEGAN 30 YEARS AGO. THE ALTOONA-JOHNSTOWN CATHOLIC DIOCESE ANNOUNCED LAST MONTH THAT THE 63 YEAR OLD KOHARCHIK HAD BEEN PLACED ON LEAVE FROM ACTIVE MINISTRY. HE WAS MOST RECENTLY SERVING SAINT CATHERINE OF SIENA CHURCH IN MOUNT UNION, HUNTINGDON COUNTY.

WEEKEND CRASHES

A 10-YEAR-OLD JOHNSTOWN BOY WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL WITH HEAD INJURIES SUNDAY NIGHT AFTER HE WAS STRUCK BY A CAR ALONG PARK AVENUE IN MOXHAM. POLICE SAY THE BOY DUCKED BETWEEN 2 CARS AND POPPED OUT IN THE PATH OF AN ONCOMING CAR. HE FLIPPED OVER THE HANDLEBARS AND LANDED ON THE WINDSHIELD OF THE CAR. THE BOY WAS NOT WEARING A HELMET. NO CHARGES HAVE BEEN FILED AGAINST THE DRIVER.

ALTOONA POLICE ARE STILL INVESTIGATING AN A-T-V CRASH THAT HAPPENED JUST BEFORE 10 SATURDAY NIGHT ALONG THE 2-HUNDRED BLOCK OF WILLOW AVENUE. POLICE BELIEVE 2 MEN WERE SPEEDING ON THE A-T-V WHEN THEY HIT A PARKED CAR. BOTH RIDERS WERE THROWN OFF…THEN THE VEHICLE FLIPPED INTO ANOTHER PARKED CAR. A 19 YEAR OLD WAS TAKEN TO ALTOONA REGIONAL TRAUMA CENTER WITH SEVERAL INJURIES, BUT THE OTHER MAN FLED. POLICE BELIEVE THEY HAVE NOW TRACKED HIM DOWN. NO WORD IF ANY CHARGES WILL BE FILED.

75 YEAR OLD EUGENE BENNETT OF BELLEFONTE IS FACING DRUNK DRIVING CHARGES AFTER A WRECK IN UNION TOWNSHIP, CENTRE COUNTY, SATURDAY EVENING. STATE POLICE SAY BENNETT PASSED ANOTHER VEHICLE IN A NO-PASSING ZONE ON OLD ROUTE 220. HE THEN LOST CONTROL WHILE TRYING TO TURN OFF THE ROAD…HIT A SIGN… DROVE THROUGH A YARD…AND WENT THROUGH AN ELECTRIC FENCE BEFORE ENDING UP IN A DITCH.

21 YEAR OLD DEVON ZUELKE OF ALTOONA IS FACING D-U-I CHARGES AFTER A CRASH SATURDAY NIGHT ALONG ROUTE 22 NEAR THE GALLITZIN EXIT. STATE POLICE SAY ZUELKE TRIED TO PASS ANOTHER VEHICLE AND LOST CONTROL OF HIS CAR WHICH RAN OFF THE HIGHWAY, HIT AN EMBANKMENT, AND FLIPPED OVER SEVERAL TIMES. ZUELKE AND HIS PASSENGER, 21 YEAR OLD CARLI AUNGST OF ALTOONA WERE TAKEN TO ALTOONA REGIONAL TRAUMA CENTER WITH MODERATE INJURIES.

D-U-I CHARGES FILED

IT WAS A PENN STATE FOOTBALL WEEKEND AND THE CENTRE COUNTY ALCOHOL TASK FORCE CONDUCTED MORE ROVING PATROLS AND COPS IN SHOPS EVENTS.
THEY ARRESTED 6 PEOPLE FOR DRUNK DRIVING AND 6 FOR PROVIDING ALCOHOL TO MINORS. COPS ALSO HANDED OUT 6 CITATIONS FOR UNDERAGE DRINKING AND ISSUED 28 OTHER TRAFFIC CITATIONS AND 77 WARNINGS.

ROBBER HITS 2 SHEETZ STORES

POLICE TELL THE ALTOONA MIRROR 20 YEAR OLD MARK LAHIVE OF LOGAN TOWNSHIP IS A SERIAL SHEETZ ROBBER. HE ALLEGEDLY TRIED TO BREAK INTO A CHOICE CIGARETTE OUTLET IN PLEASANT VALLEY BOULEVARD SHORTLY BEFORE 5AM SATURDAY…THEN HE WENT TO THE SHEETZ DOWN THE ROAD, SHOVED EMPLOYEES, AND TRIED TO REACH THE CASH REGISTERS BUT WAS NOT SUCCESSFUL. LAHIVE DID GET AWAY WITH SOME MONEY FROM THE SHEETZ ON OLD 6TH AVENUE ROAD…AND HE IS CHARGED WITH ROBBERY, THEFT, AND RECEIVING STOLEN PROPERTY. POLICE ARRESTED LAHIVE AT HIS HOME A FEW HOURS LATER.

CENTRE COUNTY FIRES

A CENTRE COUNTY FAMILY IS STAYING WITH RELATIVES AFTER A 100-THOUSAND DOLLAR FIRE AT THEIR RUSH TOWNSHIP HOME SATURDAY AFTERNOON. WINBURNE FIRE COMPANY OFFICIALS SAY THE BLAZE WAS COOKING-RELATED AT THE HOME OF JOHN AND DEBBIE GALLEY ON CASANOVA ROAD. THERE WERE NO INJURIES, BUT 3 DOGS WERE KILLED.

BELLEFONTE BORO COUNCIL HOLDS A WORK SESSION TONIGHT AT 6 AND MEMBERS WILL DISCUSS THE POSSIBILITY OF MAKING OWNERS INSTALL SPRINKLERS IN REMAINING HISTORIC BUILDINGS. LAST WEEK, THE HOTEL DO-DEE WAS DESTROYED BY FIRE, LEAVING MORE THAN 2 DOZEN PEOPLE HOMELESS. SINCE 2004, FIRE HAS ALSO DESTROYED THE APARTMENT COMPLEX THAT ONCE WAS THE BELLEFONTE ACADEMY…THE BUSH HOUSE…AND THE CADILLAC BUILDING.

SCHOOL DISTRICT SUES

THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THAT THE HOLLIDAYSBURG AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT IS THE SECOND TO FILE A CIVIL LAWSUIT AGAINST THE CENTRAL TAX BUREAU OF PENNSYLVANIA. THE COMPANY, BASED IN THE PITTSBURGH AREA, IS ACCUSED OF FAILING TO REMIT OVER 130-THOUSAND DOLLARS IN EARNED INCOME TAXES TO THE SCHOOL DISTRICT. CENTAX ALLEGEDLY OWES INCOME TAX REVENUE TO 6 OF THE 7 BLAIR COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICTS. THE COMPANY…WHICH ALSO HANDLED COLLECTIONS IN THE CITY OF ALTOONA…SHUT DOWN IN AUGUST.

KEEPING KIDS SAFE

NATIONAL CHILD PASSENGER SAFETY WEEK RUNS THROUGH SEPTEMBER 22ND AND PENNDOT AND STATE POLICE ARE HOSTING A TOTAL OF 44 CHILD SAFETY SEAT INSPECTIONS. THE STATE POLICE EBENSBURG STATION IS HOSTING ONE EVENT TODAY FROM 3 TO 5:30PM. CERTIFIED CHILD PASSENGER TECHNICIANS WILL OFFER INSPECTIONS AND ASSISTANCE WITH PROPER INSTALLATION. AN EVALUATION OF EACH SEAT FOR POSSIBLE RECALLS WILL ALSO BE CONDUCTED. IN 2011, 9 CHILDREN FROM NEWBORNS TO AGE 8 DIED IN VEHICLE CRASHES IN PENNSYLVANIA. NEARLY 25-HUNDRED CHILDREN WERE INJURED.
