MAJOR FIRE IN BELLEFONTE

A HISTORIC BELLEFONTE BUILDING WAS DESTROYED BY FIRE EARLY SUNDAY MORNING AND 2 OTHER BUILDINGS NEAR THE CENTRE COUNTY COURTHOUSE ANNEX WERE LEFT WITH MAJOR DAMAGE AND MAY HAVE TO BE TORN DOWN. THE BLAZE BROKE OUT SHORTLY AFTER MIDNIGHT AT THE DO-DEE BUILDING ON EAST HIGH STREET AND DOZENS OF FIREFIGHTERS WERE ON THE SCENE FOR 6 HOURS. ONE OF THE OTHER BUILDINGS CONTAINED THE FORMER GARMAN HOTEL, A BEAUTY SHOP AND A GUN STORE. AN UNOCCUPIED THEATER WAS ALSO DAMAGED. NO ONE WAS INJURED AND ALL RESIDENTS AND PATRONS WERE ABLE TO ESCAPE SAFELY. THE AMERICAN RED CROSS IS HELPING 26 PEOPLE WHO WERE DISPLACED. THE STATE POLICE FIRE MARSHAL IS INVESTIGATING THE CAUSE.

EMERGENCY LANDING

AN AIRPLANE MADE A SAFE EMERGENCY LANDING AROUND 5:40 LAST NIGHT AT THE JOHN MURTHA/CAMBRIA COUNTY AIRPORT. EMERGENCY CREWS SAY THERE WAS SMOKE INSIDE THE COCKPIT, BUT THEY NEVER SAW A FIRE. ABOUT 40 PEOPLE WERE ON BOARD THE UNITED AIRWAYS EXPRESS FLIGHT WHICH WAS GOING FROM DULLES TO CLEVELAND. THE FAA WILL INVESTIGATE.

GUNFIRE IN ALTOONA

ALTOONA POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING AFTER A “SHOTS FIRED” CALL AROUND 8:30 SATURDAY EVENING ON THE 1-THOUSAND BLOCK OF 2ND AVENUE. POLICE DON’T BELIEVE ANYONE WAS INJURED, BUT BULLET CASINGS FROM A SEMI-AUTOMATIC HANDGUN WERE RECOVERED AT THE SCENE. COPS ALSO FOUND THE WEAPON ON THE 1-THOUSAND BLOCK OF 3RD AVENUE. THE SUSPECT CLAIMS HE FIRED IN HOPES OF DISPERSING A LARGE FIGHT IN THE STREET. NO CHARGES HAVE BEEN FILED SO FAR.

SOBRIETY CHECKPOINT RESULTS

THE CENTRE COUNTY ALCOHOL TASK FORCE ARRESTED 11 PEOPLE FOR D-U-I FRIDAY NIGHT INTO SATURDAY MORNING. THE CHECKPOINT WAS SET UP ALONG THE 15-HUNDRED BLOCK OF NORTH ATHERTON STREET IN ST. COLLEGE. POLICE ALSO ISSUED 2 CITATIONS FOR PUBLIC DRUNKENNESS.

9/11 CEREMONIES

TOMORROW IS THE 11TH ANNIVERSARY THE SEPTEMBER 11TH TERROR ATTACKS AND THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE IS PREPARING FOR CEREMONIES AT THE FLIGHT 93 MEMORIAL. SECRETARY OF DEFENSE LEON PANETTA PLANS TO TAKE A PRIVATE TOUR TODAY AND A LUMINARY CEREMONY WILL BE HELD TONIGHT AT 7:30. VICE PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN WILL SPEAK AT THE MEMORIAL TOMORROW. TUESDAY’S ACTIVITIES BEGIN AT 9:45AM AND THE NAMES OF THE PASSENGERS AND CREW WILL BE READ AT 10:03. MORE THAN 350 THOUSAND PEOPLE HAVE VISITED THE MEMORIAL IN THE PAST YEAR.

THE U.S. POSTAL SERVICE IS ONCE AGAIN OFFERING A PICTORIAL CANCELLATION COMMEMORATING THE PASSENGERS AND CREW OF UNITED FLIGHT 93 WHO DIED ON 9/11. THE POSTMARK HAS THE IMAGE OF THE FLIGHT 93 MEMORIAL CHAPEL AND WAS DESIGNED BY THE DIRECTOR OF THE CHAPEL, BISHOP ALPHONSE MASCHERINO. CANCELLATIONS ARE AVAILABLE AT THE SHANKSVILLE POST OFFICE BETWEEN 8 AND 4 TOMORROW. AFTER THAT, THE CANCELLATION MAY BE OBTAINED THROUGH THE MAIL IF THE REQUEST IS POSTMARKED WITHIN 30 DAYS.

P-S-U TRUSTEES MEET THIS WEEK

WHEN PENN STATE TRUSTEES MEET FRIDAY, THEY WILL CONSIDER RENAMING THE CHILD CARE CENTER PREVIOUSLY NAMED FOR FORMER ADMINISTRATOR GARY SCHULTZ WHO IS NOW FACING PERJURY CHARGES RELATED TO THE JERRY SANDUSKY CASE. THE BOARD WILL ALSO UPDATE EVERYONE ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE FREEH REPORT RECOMMENDATIONS AND DISCUSS THE UNIVERSITY’S STATE APPROPRIATION REQUEST FOR 2013-14. THIS YEAR, THE STATE HELD THE AMOUNT OF FUNDING STEADY AFTER SLASHING SUPPORT NEARLY 20 PERCENT IN 2011-12.

ILLEGAL CELLPHONES?

ALTOONA SCHOOL HONORED

JUNIATA SCHOOL IN ALTOONA IS ONE OF 5 PENNSYLVANIA ELEMENTARIES RECOGNIZED AS A 2012 NATIONAL BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL. A TOTAL OF 8 SCHOOLS IN PENNSYLVANIA WERE RECOGNIZED. U.S. SECRETARY OF EDUCATION ARNIE DUNCAN SAYS 269 U-S SCHOOLS EARNED THE HONOR BASED ON THEIR OVERALL ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE OR FOR MAKING PROGRESS IN IMPROVING STUDENT ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT LEVELS. THE RECOGNITION CEREMONY WILL BE HELD NOVEMBER 12TH AND 13TH IN WASHINGTON, D.C.
