CRASHES…ONE FATALITY

ONE PERSON DIED IN A CRASH JUST AFTER MIDNIGHT SUNDAY IN ANTIS TOWNSHIP, BLAIR COUNTY. STATE POLICE SAY THE DRIVER WAS NORTHBOUND ON ROUTE 10-01IN A CONSTRUCTION ZONE WHEN THEY HIT THE SIGNS BARRICADING THE ROAD FOR A BRIDGE PROJECT. THE VEHICLE THEN STRUCK A 100 TON CRANE AND CAUGHT FIRE, TRAPPING THE DRIVER INSIDE. THE VICTIM’S IDENTITY HAS NOT YET BEEN RELEASED.

AT LEAST 5 PEOPLE WERE TAKEN TO ALTOONA REGIONAL TRAUMA CENTER FOLLOWING A CRASH SUNDAY AFTERNOON ON I-99 BETWEEN THE 17TH STREET AND PINECROFT EXITS. STATE POLICE SAY 2 VEHICLES WERE INVOLVED, BUT THEY HAVEN’T RELEASED FURTHER DETAILS. THE HIGHWAY WAS CLOSED FOR ABOUT HALF AN HOUR. IT HAPPENED SHORTLY AFTER A VEHICLE FIRE NEAR THE PINECROFT EXIT THAT ALSO TIED UP TRAFFIC.

41 YEAR OLD RONALD HARTLESS OF ROSSITER SUFFERED MODERATE INJURIES IN A CRASH EARLY SATURDAY IN CLEARFIELD COUNTY. STATE POLICE SAY HARTLESS RAN OFF THE BERM OF ROUTE 153 IN PINE TOWNSHIP, THEN HE OVER-CORRECTED AND HIS PICKUP SLAMMED INTO THE GUIDERAILS THEN RAN DOWN AN EMBANKMENT. HARTLESS WAS FLOWN TO ALTOONA REGIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM.

2 ATV ACCIDENTS IN THE AREA…THE FIRST IN CLEARFIELD COUNTY. POLICE SAY 29 YEAR OLD RANDY STEINER WAS NOT WEARING A HELMET WHEN HE WAS THROWN OFF HIS ATV NEAR KARTHAUS TOWNSHIP. STEINER WAS FLOWN TO ALTOONA REGIONAL TRAUMA CENTER AND FACES AT LEAST 3 TRAFFIC CITATIONS. THE SECOND ACCIDENT HAPPENED IN NORTHAMPTON TOWNSHIP IN SOMERSET COUNTY. 21 YEAR OLD JACOB HILLEGAS OF MEYERSDALE WAS RIDING AN ATV THAT ROLLED OVER. HE WAS FLOWN TO JOHNSTOWN’S MEMORIAL MEDICAL CENTER.

KAYAKERS ARE OK

IN SOMERSET COUNTY, RESCUE CREWS SAY THEY HAVE FOUND 3 MISSIING KAYAKERS. THEY DISAPPEARED AROUND 5:30 SUNDAY AFTERNOON NEAR THE QUEMAHONING RESERVOIR. THE BOATERS ARE REPORTEDLY SAFE AND SOUND.

FORMER ALTOONA COPS WANT SOME CHARGES DROPPED

FORMER ALTOONA POLICE OFFICERS ERIC KRINER AND DUANE EICHENLAUB ARE SCHEDULED TO ATTEND A PRE-TRIAL CONFERENCE TODAY. THEY ARE AWAITING TRIAL IN CONNECTION WITH THE BEATINGS OF 2 MEN AT PELLEGRINE’S LOUNGE IN MAY 2010…AND THE COVER-UP THAT FOLLOWED…AND THEY ARE NOW ASKING FOR SEPARATE TRIALS. THE DEFENSE MOTION ALSO ASKS THAT MANY OF THE CHARGES BE DISMISSED DUE TO A LACK OF EVIDENCE…AND FOR A CHANGE OF VENUE DUE TO EXTENSIVE PUBLICITY. THE VICTIMS FILED CIVIL SUITS EARLIER THIS MONTH.

ACCUSED MOLESTER DUE IN COURT

65 YEAR OLD LARRY “SPARKY” MYERS OF HUNTINGDON WAS ARRESTED LAST MONTH ON CHARGES OF SEXUALLY ABUSING 3 BOYS AND HE’S DUE FOR PRELIMINARY ARRAIGNMENT ON 145 NEW CHARGES TODAY. STATE POLICE SAY MYERS ASSAULTED 5 MORE VICTIMS FROM 2003 FROM 2010. ALL 8 ALLEGED VICTIMS ARE FROM EITHER AMISH OR MENNONITE FAMILIES IN THE BIG VALLEY AREA. MYERS REMAINS JAILED.

THE FARMER'S MARKET IS VOLUNTARILY RECALLING BLENDS OF PRE-PACKAGED LETTUCE DUE TO POSSIBLE LISTERIA CONTAMINATION. RIVER RANCH FRESH FOODS RECALLED 7 SALAD VARIETIES FRIDAY AND ADDED ANOTHER 6 BLENDS OVER THE WEEKEND. AFFECTED PACKAGES HAVE EXPIRATION DATES RANGING FROM MAY 12TH TO MAY 29TH.  GIANT EAGLE CARRIES THE FARMER'S MARKET BRAND.

GAS PRICES ARE DOWN MORE THAN 6 CENTS A GALLON OVER THE PAST 2 WEEKS. THE AVERAGE FOR REGULAR IS $3.78, ACCORDING TO THE NATIONWIDE LUNDBERG SURVEY. THE HIGHEST AVERAGE IS IN SAN FRANCISCO, AT $4.36. THE LOWEST IS IN MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE, AT $3.34. MANY AREA DRIVERS ARE PAYING $3.65 TO $3.69.

THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION’S “CLICK IT OR TICKET” CAMPAIGN RUNS THROUGH JUNE 10TH…AND STATE POLICE WILL HOLD FREE CHILD CAR SEAT CHECKUP EVENTS TODAY. ONE IS FROM 3:30 TO 8:30 AT THE DAUNTLESS FIRE DEPARTMENT IN EBENSBURG. THE OTHERS: FROM 3 TO 6 AT TEAM CHEVROLET IN HUNTINGDON….3 TO 6 AT SAM’S CLUB IN ALTOONA… AND 4 TO 8 AT THE PLEASANT GAP FIRE COMPANY. CERTIFIED CHILD PASSENGER TECHNICIANS WILL OFFER CAR SEAT INSPECTIONS AND ASSISTANCE WITH PROPER INSTALLATION.
