today is the first day of school for many students in the area. drivers should watch out for kids walking and follow all school bus laws. you must stop within 10 feet when approaching a bus with its red lights flashing and its “stop” arm extended. violators will receive a 60-day license suspension, 5 points on their driving record, and a 250-dollar fine.

AFTER CLOSING 2 elementary sCHOOLS, THE ALTOONA SCHOOL DISTRICT ANGERED SOME PARENTS BY MOVING Students TO OTHER BUILDINGS. THE DISTRICT IS invitING KIDS AND THEIR PARENTS to a Transition Meeting/Open House. EVENTS ARE SCHEDULED TODAY AT EBNER ELEMENTARY FROM 1 TO 2:30…LOGAN ELEMENTARY FROM 1 TO 3…AND PENN LINCOLN FROM 6 TO 8PM. OTHERS WILL BE HELD LATER IN THE WEEK. CLASSES FOR ALTOONA STUDENTS START AFTER LABOR DAY.

TEMPORARY BLEACHER INSTALLATION ON THE WEST/VISITOR SIDE OF MEMORIAL FIELD AT ST. COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL WILL BEGIN TODAY. THE SIDEWALK AND ROAD WORK ON FRAZIER STREET IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE BEYOND SEPTEMBER 6TH, THE NIGHT OF THE LITTLE LIONS’ OPENER, BUT IT SHOULD NOT AFFECT THE GAME. TURF INSTALLATION IS ALMOST COMPLETE.

BOATER DROWNS

A WEEKEND DROWNING IS UNDER INVESTIGATION IS INDIANA COUNTY. THE CORONER’S OFFICE SAYS 55 YEAR OLD BENJAMIN HILL OF PENN RUN DIED SATURDAY AT YELLOW CREEK STATE PARK. HE APPARENTLY DIVED INTO THE WATER TO GET HIS boat WHICH HAD drifted away from the dock. a water rescue team FOUND His body ABOUT 50 feet from the dock.

FATAL WRECK

A DEADLY WRECK THIS WEEKEND NEAR LOCK HAVEN IN CLINTON COUNTY. STATE POLICE SAY 55 YEAR OLD BERNARD DEMKO OF FLorida crashed his motorcycle on Interstate 80. DEMKO was not wearing a helmet and died at the scene.

CRASHES

57 YEAR OLD JAMES CUMMINGS OF GRAMPIAN WAS FLOWN TO UPMC ALTOONA WITH MAJOR INJURIES SUNDAY AFTERNOON. STATE POLICE SAY CUMMINGS TRIED TO MAKE A U-TURN ALONG 6TH STREET EXTENSION IN PENN TOWNSHIP, CLEARFIELD COUNTY, BUT HE WAS GOING TOO FAST. HIS A-T-V OVERTURNED AND CUMMINGS WAS NOT WEARING A HELMET.

27 YEAR OLD MATTHEW MILLER OF FALLS CREEK SUFFERED SERIOUS INJURIES IN A CRASH EARLY SATURDAY ALONG I-80 IN CLEARFIELD COUNTY. STATE POLICE SAY MILLER SWERVED ACROSS THE LANES OF TRAVEL IN LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP AND CRASHED THROUGH THE GUIDERAIL. HE WAS FLOWN TO AN AREA HOSPITAL.

STATE COLLEGE POLICE SAY A Penn State student was hit by a car SUNDAY AFTERNOON at THE busy intersection OF POLLOCK AND BIGLER ROADS. She was taken by ambulance TO MOUNT NITTANY MEDICAL CENTER, but is expected to be okay. THE investigation CONTINUES.

FATHER’S TRIAL TO BEGIN

In cambria county court, Testimony begins today in the vehicular homicide trial of 38 year old brian roles senior of East Taylor Township. Police say ROLES WAS UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL AND DRUGS LAST YEAR WHEN HIS PICKUP CRASHED, KILLING HIS 16 YEAR OLD SON, BRIAN JUNIOR. ROLES WAS DRIVING WITH A SUSPENDED LICENSE DUE TO A PREVIOUS D-U-I. THE TRIAL IS EXPECTED TO TAKE 3 OR 4 DAYS.

COPS INJURED

THE CENTRE DAILY times REPORTS THAT SEVERAL State College police officers WERE injured late Saturday night IN a scuffle with a group of men who had open beer cans ALONG THE 300 BLOCK OF EAST PROSPECT AVENUE. 19 YEAR OLD PENN STATE STUDENT Mario Palarino was charged with aggravated assault, Resisting arrest, underage drinking, and OTHER OFFENSES. Police said Palarino kicked multiple officers causing minor arm abrasions and tried to run. Another 19-year-old is expected to be charged with possession of marijuana, disorderly conduct, AND possession of a fake I.D. ONE officer broke his finger trying to grab the second man. Palarino Is IN THE Centre County PRISON WITH a preliminary hearing SET for Wednesday.

INCIDENTS IN STATE COLLEGE

PENN STATE’S FALL SEMESTER BEGINS TODAY AND State College police reported aN increase in crimes and violations downtown. overnight Friday and into Saturday there were 2 D-U-Is, 9 alcohol and minor-related charges, 1 disorderly conduct, 2 ordinance violations and 1 public intoxication. Police also reported 2 ALLEGED sexual assaults. one IS still UNDER investigation AND the alleged victim dropped the charges in the Second case. ALSO, EARLY FRIDAY MORNING, A PENN STATE STUDENT CLAIMS SHE WAS FORCIBLY RAPED.

SANDUSKY SCANDAL

AN ATTORNEY REPORTS THAT 7 more victims of Jerry Sandusky have settled THEIR LAWSUITS with PENN STATE.  Among theM are Sandusky’s adopted son Matt and SO-CALLED “victim 2” who was seen IN THE SHOWER WITH SANDUSKY By Mike McQueary. The terms of the settlementS have not been disclosed. PENN STATE IS SETTLING WITH MORE THAN 2 DOZEN MEN.

Army combat medic SERGEANT Adam Hartswick OF PINE GROVE MILLS LOST BOTH LEGS IN AN I-E-D EXPLOSION IN AFGHANISTAN EARLIER THIS YEAR…NOW state RepRESENTATIVE Scott Conklin PLANS TO introduce legislation to re-name a stretch of ROUTE 45 in THE Pine Grove Mills AREA IN HIS HONOR. the DESIGNATION would Run from the intersection of state Route 26 to U-S Route 322 in Boalsburg. Hartswick graduated from State College Area High School in 2009. HE is STILL a patient at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, BUT RETURNS TO CENTRE COUNTY On weekends.

Drivers are enjoying lower prices at the pump. The latest Lundberg survey shows the average price for a gallon of gas slid again in the last 2 weeks, LANDING AT $3.55 on average on August 23rd. The lowest prices were found in Charleston, South Carolina, AT $3.22. IN OUR AREA, WE’RE STILL PAYING $3.59.
