ALTOONA DISTRESSED?

ALTOONA IS THE LATEST CITY TO JOIN PENNSYLVANIA’S ACT 47 PROGRAM FOR DISTRESSED  MUNICIPALITIES. THE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OFFICIALLY APPROVED ALTOONA’S APPLICATION YESTERDAY.
COUNCILMAN BRUCE KELLEY TELLS WTAJ IF THE CITY DOESN’T JOIN, OFFICIALS WOULD BE FORCED TO CUT 40 POSITIONS, INCLUDING FIREFIGHTERS AND POLICEMEN. THE NEXT STEP IS FOR THE STATE DEPARTMENT TO APPOINT AN ACT 47 COORDINATOR FOR ALTOONA…THEN THAT PERSON HAS 90 DAYS TO COME UP WITH A PLAN ON HOW TO SAVE MONEY.

TRUCK DRIVER KILLED

A TRACTORTRAILER DRIVER WAS KILLED YESTERDAY AFTERNOON WHEN HIS RIG BURST INTO FLAMES ALONG THE TURNPIKE NEAR MANNS CHOICE, BEDFORD COUNTY. AUTHORITIES AREN’T SURE HOW THE FIRE STARTED. THE VICTIM’S NAME HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED.

GIRL KIDNAPPED…THEN SET FREE

A KIDNAPPING YESTERDAY IN SOMERSET TOWNSHIP. POLICE SAY A 10 YEAR OLD GIRL WAS ABDUCTED AROUND 4PM ON WILLS ROAD, BUT SHE WAS RELEASED A SHORT DISTANCE LATER. AUTHORITIES ARE LOOKING FOR A DARK COLORED VAN, WITH NUMEROUS DENTS ON ITS EXTERIOR. THE VEHICLE HAS 2 FRONT SEATS AND TINTED WINDOWS.THE SUSPECT IS A WHITE MAN WITH A FULL BEARD AND SALT AND PEPPER HAIR. HE WAS WEARING A DIRTY ORANGE SHIRT, RIPPED JEANS AND SANDALS WITH NO SOCKS.  

BANK ROBBER GOES ONE FOR TWO

POLICE ARE SEARCHING FOR THE WOMAN WHO TRIED TO ROB M & T BANK IN TYRONE LATE THURSDAY MORNING…AND THEN DID HOLD UP FIRST SUMMIT BANK IN SALIX, CAMBRIA COUNTY, IN THE AFTERNOON. SURVEILLANCE PHOTOS SHOW A BLONDE WOMAN IN HER 20’S, WEARING A GREY MILITARY HOODIE, AND A DARK BLUE PENN STATE HAT AT THE TYRONE BANK. SHE SHOWED THE TELLER A NOTE THROUGH A WINDOW, BUT DIDN’T GET ANY CASH. LATER, A WOMAN MATCHING THAT DESCRIPTION HIT THE SECOND BANK AND DID GET SOME MONEY. SHE WAS LAST SEEN HEADING TOWARD THE DUNLO AREA AND POLICE BELIEVE A GETAWAY CAR WAS WAITING FOR HER.

SANDUSKY SCANDAL

JUDGE JOHN CLELAND HAS DENIED THE PROSECUTION’S REQUEST TO RESTRICT JERRY SANDUSKY’S ATTORNEY, JOE AMENDOLA, FROM ISSUING SUBPOENAS. IT HAPPENED ON THE SAME DAY THAT JUNIATA COLLEGE JOINED THE SECOND MILE AND THE KEYSTONE CENTRAL AND MIFFLIN COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN FILING MOTIONS TO QUASH THE SUBPOENAS. THE JUDGE ALSO ORDERED THE STATE TO TURN OVER ALL MATERIALS TO THE DEFENSE BEFORE WEDNESDAY’S HEARING.

HAZING AT PENN STATE?

PENN STATE POLICE CHIEF TYRONE PARHAM SAYS OFFICERS ARE CURRENTLY INVESTIGATING 3 ALLEGED HAZING INCIDENTS. IN ONE, FRESHMAN ASYA TROWELL CLAIMED SHE WAS BADLY HURT WHEN SHE WAS BEATEN BY MEMBERS OF A “LITTLE SISTER” GROUP OF A FRATERNITY. ANOTHER FEMALE STUDENT CLAIMS SHE WAS HARASSED AND SUBJECTED TO PHYSICAL HAZING BY MEMBERS OF AN ON-CAMPUS SORORITY. ALSO BACK IN MARCH, A GROUP OF MEN WERE SEEN ENTERING A RESIDENCE HALL CLOSED FOR SPRING BREAK. POLICE ARRIVED AND FOUND WHAT THEY DESCRIBED AS SUSPECTED HAZING ACTIVITY.

KILLER CONVICTED…AGAIN

A CLEARFIELD COUNTY JURY YESTERDAY CONVICTED EDWARD HUMMEL ONCE AGAIN FOR THE 1991 SHOOTING DEATH OF HIS WIFE DEBRA. HE SHOT HIMSELF IN THE HEAD AFTER THE MURDER AND REMAINS A PARAPLEGIC. HUMMEL WAS FIRST FOUND GUILTY IN 1993, BUT A NEW TRIAL WAS GRANTED BECAUSE HUMMEL’S COMPETENCY HAD NOT BEEN TESTED. HIS SECOND TRIAL ENDED IN A MIS-TRIAL. THE COUPLE’S DAUGHTERS…WHO WERE TEENAGERS WHEN THEIR MOTHER WAS KILLED…TESTIFIED THAT EDWARD WAS PHYSICALLY AND VERBALLY ABUSIVE TOWARD HER AND TOLD HER SHE NEEDED A BULLET IN HER HEAD JUST WEEKS BEFORE THE SHOOTING. HUMMEL WILL GET LIFE IN PRISON.

KILLERS SENTENCED

IN SOMERSET COUNTY COURT YESTERDAY, TORIANO MCCRAY WAS SENTENCED TO 10 TO 30 YEARS IN A STATE PRISON AND RONALD WASHINGTON THE SECOND RECEIVED 7-AND-A-HALF TO 30 YEARS. BOTH MICHIGAN MEN PLEADED GUILTY TO 3RD DEGREE MURDER IN THE AUGUST 2009 SHOOTING DEATH OF DRUG DEALER BRYANT ADDERLEY NEAR BAKERSVILLE. THE ADMITTED GETAWAY CAR DRIVER, RONALD ZIEGEL OF FRIEDENS, WITHDREW HIS GUILTY PLEA AND HE WILL STAND TRIAL. LAST MONTH, A JURY CONVICTED CALVIN MALLORY JUNIOR OF FIRST-DEGREE MURDER FOR ORDERING THE HIT ON ADDERLEY.

JAIL TIME FOR COKE DEALER

MAJOR BLAIR COUNTY DRUG DEALER BRIAN PFISTER YESTERDAY WAS SENTENCED TO 7 TO 14 YEARS IN PRISON, BUT THE JUDGE DID RECOMMEND HIM FOR A PROGRAM THAT COULD TAKE THE ACTUAL JAIL TIME DOWN TO A LITTLE UNDER 6 YEARS INCLUDING A DRUG AND ALCOHOL EDUCATION COURSE. PFISTER WAS ARRESTED 2 YEARS AGO IN WHAT ALTOONA POLICE CALLED THE BIGGEST LOCAL DRUG BUST SINCE THE EARLY 90’S. HE PLEADED GUILTY TO POSSESSION WITH THE INTENT TO DELIVER COCAINE.
