MOM CONVICTED

HUNTINGDON COUNTY MOM JULIE DICK-CARSON WAIVED A JURY TRIAL AND YESTERDAY CENTRE COUNTY JUDGE JONATHAN GRINE FOUND HER GUILTY OF FELONY AGGRAVATED ASSAULT BY VEHICLE WHILE UNDER THE INFLUENCE AND VARIOUS OTHER CHARGES. POLICE SAY DICK-CARSON HUFFED AN AEROSOL THEN CRASHED HER CAR IN COLLEGE TOWNSHIP LAST JULY. HER 1 YEAR OLD SON SUFFERED A FRACTURED SKULL. DICK-CARSON TESTIFIED THAT SHE USED THE AEROSOL CAN TO CLEAN THE DASHBOARD OF HER CAR. NO WORD ON A SENTENCING DATE.

DRUNK & DRUGGED DRIVER ARRAIGNED IN CHILD’S DEATH

BEDFORD COUNTY D-A BILL HIGGINS PREDICTS A LONG PRISON SENTENCE FOR 23 YEAR OLD CORY CHILDERS OF BEDFORD WHO WAS ARRAIGNED YESTERDAY ON CHARGES INCLUDING HOMICIDE BY VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING DRUNK. AUTHORITIES SAY CHILDERS’ BLOOD ALCOHOL WAS MORE THAN TWICE THE LEGAL LIMIT AND HE HAD MORPHINE IN HIS SYSTEM BACK IN APRIL WHEN HIS CAR SLAMMED INTO A MINI-VAN CARRYING A FAMILY OF 4 FROM MARYLAND. 5-YEAR-OLD JULIAN WINTERS WAS THROWN FROM THE VAN AND DIED AT THE SCENE. HIS PARENTS AND 2-YEAR-OLD BROTHER WERE INJURED. CHILDERS IS IN THE COUNTY JAIL.

VICTIMS IDENTIFIED

A 77 YEAR OLD CENTRE COUNTY MAN IS DEAD AFTER A CRASH THURSDAY AFTERNOON ALONG TAYLOR HILL ROAD IN POTTER TOWNSHIP. POLICE SAY HOWARD SWANK OF CENTRE HALL WAS RIDING IN A CAR DRIVEN BY HIS WIFE WHEN IT DRIFTED OFF ROUTE 322…WENT DOWN AN EMBANKMENT…AND TIPPED ONTO THE PASSENGER SIDE IN A DITCH. THE CAR THEN CAUGHT ON FIRE. 77 YEAR OLD VIRGINIA SWANK WAS ADMITTED TO MOUNT NITTANY MEDICAL CENTER FOR OBSERVATION.

THE BEDFORD COUNTY CORONER HAS RELEASED THE NAME OF THE MOTORCYCLIST KILLED IN A CRASH TUESDAY MORNING IN HOPEWELL BORO. AUTHORITIES SAY 35 YEAR OLD CLAIR BAKER DIED AROUND 12:45AM AFTER FAILING TO NEGOTIATE A RIGHT TURN ON FRONT STREET. BAKER WAS NOT WEARING A HELMET AND SPEED AND ALCOHOL ARE ALSO BELIEVED TO BE FACTORS.

ACCUSED DEALERS IN COURT

3 ACCUSED DRUG DEALERS WAIVED THEIR PRELIMINARY HEARINGS YESTERDAY IN BLAIR COUNTY. AFTER RECEIVING AN FBI TIP LAST MONTH, THE DRUG TASK FORCE ARRESTED JOSEPH CASTRO OF ROARING SPRING AND NICHOLE RANKIN AND PETER DONATO, BOTH OF TIRE HILL. THEY SEIZED MORE THAN 6-THOUSAND BAGS OF HEROIN WITH A STREET VALUE OF OVER 180-THOUSAND DOLLARS. THEY ALSO NABBED A NUMBER OF WEAPONS, INCLUDING 2 SAWED OFF SHOTGUNS, AND 16-THOUSAND DOLLARS IN CASH. ALL 3 SUSPECTS ARE IN THE BLAIR COUNTY PRISON.

WOODEN ALLIGATOR STOLEN

40 YEAR OLD TODD PENSYL OF ALTOONA IS IN THE BLAIR COUNTY JAIL AND 41 YEAR OLD MICHAEL BARNER OF TYRONE IS FREE ON BAIL FOLLOWING AN INCIDENT ON JULY 4TH. STATE POLICE SAY PENSYL ENTERED BARNER’S HOME WITHOUT PERMISSION…ASSAULTED BARNER…THEN STOLE A CARVED WOODEN ALLIGATOR WHICH HE LATER TOSSED. BARNER…WHO WAS TREATED FOR HIS INJURIES AT ALTOONA REGIONAL TRAUMA CENTER…WAS ARRESTED ON A NON-RELATED SIMPLE ASSAULT CHARGE. PRELIMINARY HEARINGS ARE SCHEDULED TUESDAY.

SANDUSKY SCANDAL

FORMER PENN STATE PRESIDENT GRAHAM SPANIER IS ASKING THE COURT TO OVERRULE PENN STATE’S OBJECTIONS TO HIS LAWSUIT WHICH ASKS THAT HIS OLD EMAILS BE RETURNED TO HIM SO HE CAN COOPERATE IN THE ON-GOING INTERNAL INVESTIGATION INTO THE JERRY SANDUSKY SCANDAL. LAST MONTH, THE UNIVERSITY ASKED THE COURT TO THROW OUT THE LAWSUIT, SAYING SPANIER SHOULD DIRECT HIS COMPLAINT TO THE STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL.THE ATTORNEY GENERAL’S OFFICE HAS ASKED THE UNIVERSITY NOT TO SHARE THE INFORMATION BECAUSE IT COULD COMPROMISE INVESTIGATIONS. SO FAR, SPANIER HAS NOT BEEN CHARGED WITH ANY CRIMINAL ACTIVITY.

DESPITE THE JERRY SANDUSKY SCANDAL AND ALL THE PENDING LAWSUITS, PENN STATE WILL STILL AWARD ANNUAL PAY RAISES TO FACULTY AND STAFF. EMPLOYEES WERE NOTIFIED OF THE DECISION THIS WEEK. THE FINAL NUMBERS WILL BE ANNOUNCED LATER THIS SUMMER.
