SANDUSKY CASE NOT DISMISSED

JUDGE JOHN CLELAND YESTERDAY REFUSED TO DISMISS THE CHARGES AGAINST JERRY SANDUSKY BECAUSE THE GRAND JURY INVESTIGATION IS ON-GOING, BUT HE WILL ALLOW THE DEFENSE TEAM TO ASK FOR A DISMISSAL AGAIN CLOSER TO THE JUNE TRIAL DATE. CLELAND DISAGREED WITH DEFENSE ARGUMENTS THAT SOME OF THE CHARGES AGAINST SANDUSKY WERE NOT SPCIFIC ENOUGH AND THAT EVIDENCE WAS LACKING IN OTHERS. THE JUDGE ALSO RULED THAT JURORS WILL BE QUESTIONED INDIVIDUALLY. HE DEFERRED RULING ON A SECOND REQUEST THAT JURORS BE SEQUESTERED AT TRIAL.

FELONY CHARGES DROPPED AGAINST SORORITY SISTERS

A MAGISTERIAL DISTRICT JUDGE YESTERDAY DROPPED FELONY AGGRAVATED ASSAULT CHARGES AGAINST PENN STATE ALTOONA SORORITY SISTERS BROOKE NOLAN OF PHILADELPHIA AND ANGELA KIM OF VIRGINIA. THEY ARE STILL CHARGED WITH ASSAULT FOR ALLEGEDLY BEATING A VISITING WOMAN UNCONSCIOUS DURING A NITTANY POINTE APARTMENTS PARTY LAST MONTH. OTHER STUDENTS REPORTEDLY PARTICIPATED BUT POLICE COULD ONLY IDENTIFY NOLAN AND KIM. THEIR FORMAL ARRAIGNMENT IS MAY 18TH. PENN STATE ALTOONA HAS SUSPENDED THE GAMMA PHI BETA SORORITY.

MURDERER CONVICTED

A SOMERSET COUNTY JURY DELIBERATED FOR LESS THAN 2 HOURS BEFORE FINDING CALVIN MALLORY OF BROOKLYN NEW YORK GUILTY OF FIRST DEGREE MURDER FOR HIRING 3 OTHER MEN TO KILLED FELLOW DRUG-DEALER BRYANT ADDERLEY OF BAKERSVILLE IN 2009. ADDERLY WAS SHOT 22 TIMES. TORIANO MCCRAY AND ROLAND WASHINGTON PLEADED GUILTY TO 3RD DEGREE MURDER IN FEBRUARY AND TESTIFIED THAT MALLORY ORDERED THEM TO “TEACH THE VICTIM A LESSON”.  RONALD ZEIGEL, THE GET-AWAY DRIVER ALSO TESTIFIED AGAINST MALLORY. SENTENCING IS SET FOR JUNE AND THE DEFENSE PLANS TO APPEAL.

STRYKER CRASH

IT COULD HAVE BEEN A LOT WORSE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON WHEN A MILITARY STRYKER VEHICLE CRASHED ALONG ROUTE 119 IN PUNXSUTAWNEY. PART OF THE 56TH STRYKER BRIGADE WAS TRAVELING FROM JOHNSTOWN TO PUNXSY WHEN THE DRIVER LOST CONTROL, APPARENTLY DUE TO A BRAKE PROBLEM. THE 22-THOUSAND POUND VEHICLE WENT UP A RUN-AWAY TRUCK RAMP, BUT AVOIDED BUILDINGS. 2 OF THE 3 COMBAT ENGINEERS IN THE STRYKER WERE TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL WITH MODERATE INJURIES

FORMER PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON HAS ENDORSED FIRST-TERM CONGRESSMAN MARK CRITZ OF JOHNSTOWN. ON APRIL 24TH, CRITZ FACES OFF AGAINST FELLOW CONGRESSMAN JASON ALTMIRE IN THE DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY…THANKS TO THE CONGRESSIONAL RE-DISTRICTING PROCESS. CLINTON’S STATEMENT SAID – QUOTE -- “I KNOW THAT MARK WILL CONTINUE HIS WORK TO CREATE JOBS, STRENGTHEN THE MIDDLE CLASS, TO PROTECT SOCIAL SECURITY AND MEDICARE AND DO WHAT IS RIGHT FOR WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA AND OUR NATION.” THE PRIMARY WINNER WILL MEET REPUBLICAN KEITH ROTHFUS IN NOVEMBER.

NEW LEGISLATIVE DISTRICTS

THE STATE SUPREME COURT THREW OUT THE FIRST  ONE…AND NOW THERE’S A NEW PROPOSAL TO RE-DRAW STATE LEGISLATIVE LINES. THE STATE LEGISLATIVE REAPPORTIONMENT COMMISSION GAVE PRELIMINARY APPROVAL TO THE COMPROMISE LAST NIGHT. IT WOULD MOVE REPRESENTATIVE BUD GEORGE’S SEAT AFTER HE RETIRES IN NOVEMBER AND WOULD ALSO TAKE AWAY THE SEAT CURRENTLY HELD BY SENATOR JANE ORIE, WHO HAS BEEN CONVICTED OF CORRUPTION. A PUBLIC HEARING WILL BE HELD MAY 2ND.

TURNPIKE CLOSURE

TURNPIKE OFFICIALS SAY THE EAST- AND WESTBOUND LANES OF THE HIGHWAY WILL BE CLOSED FOR ABOUT 4 HOURS BETWEEN THE SOMERSET AND BEDFORD EXITS BEGINNING AT 11:30PM SATURDAY NIGHT. CREWS WILL BE REMOVING THE CIDER ROAD OVERPASS IN JUNIATA TOWNSHIP, BEDFORD COUNTY.
