Mount Union Area High School Career Exploration Class 5th Annual Community Service Dinner

On May 3, 2013, the Mount Union Area High School Career Exploration Class will host the fifth annual Community Service Dinner.  This year’s theme, “Unity in the Community,” ties in with other community wide events taking place during the weekend.  The dinner will feature a complete turkey dinner with all the trimmings.  Entertainment will be provided by senior class member, Alex Ashman.  The cost of the dinner is $8.00 per adult size portion and $5.00 per child size portion, under age 5 are free.  The meal options include dine in or take out.  The proceeds of the dinner will go toward three local charities including:  the Ministerium, The Food Bank, and the Friends of the Mount Union Library.  Each year, the event is student driven.  All 140 members of the Career Exploration Class are involved in the planning and development of the dinner and activities.  Last year, the classes donated more than $1,500 to the three charitable organizations.  Tickets for the dinner can be purchased through any Career Exploration class member or by contacting Business Education Instructors, Mrs. Marjorie Biddle or Mr. Jeff Detwiler at (814)542-2518. 


This year’s dinner will serve as the kickoff event for a weekend of community related activities associated with Mount Union’s annual Mount Unity Weekend sponsored by Planet Lovejoy.  There are several graduation projects that will be presented over the weekend as part of the “Unity in the Community” theme.  Projects include a tour of the new MUHS court yard; a student art exhibit that will be in the lobby of the School’s Community Entrance ; a collage highlighting student activities at MUAHS and a mural depicting Mount Union’s industrialized heritage and unity.  Finally, a Lip Dub will be featured in the auditorium which will focus on heightened school spirit.


In addition to Friday’s activities, the public is invited to help “recycle” and clean up the community as Burgmeier’s Shredding will be on hand to shred, safely and securely, unwanted personal documents.  The free public shredding event will take place Friday, from 3:15 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.  The shredding truck will be located at the high school near the school’s Gymnasium Annex parking lot.


On Saturday, May 4, 2013 several students will present their graduation projects as part of the Mount Unity Weekend activities.  There will be a new sign dedication “I Love Mount Union” which will take place on the school grounds near the bypass at 9:15 a.m.  Another graduation project taking place is “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®.”  This project is aimed at heightening the awareness of abuse toward women.  It encourages men to walk a mile in women’s styled footwear in support of women.  It is scheduled to begin at 12:00   a.m. with registration at the Mount Union Teener League Field. The actual walk will commence at 1:00 p.m. starting at Garber Street. Participants are welcome.
