Cresson Lake Playhouse is pleased to present AIDA opening July 25 through August 10 under the direction of Claire Houser. She has served as Stage Manager for numerous CLP directors, graced our stage most recently seen in the Marvelous Wonderettes and Winter Wonderettes.” Claire makes her debut as the director of Elton John and Tim Rice’s AIDA.
The production is a contemporary musical take on a grand classic tale of the timeless bond between an enslaved Nubian princess and an Egyptian soldier is making its debut at Cresson Lake Playhouse and as forbidden love blossoms between them, the young lovers are forced to face death or part forever. Together, they set a shining example of true devotion that ultimately transcends the vast cultural differences between their warring nations, heralding a time of unprecedented peace and prosperity.
Winner of four 2000 Tony Awards including Best Musical Score with music by Elton John and lyrics by Tim Aida shares a title and plot with Giuseppe Verdi’s 1871 opera; it’s an old-fashioned, wrong-side-of-the-Nile story about the ill-fated romance between Egyptian general Radames and a Nubian slave girl, Aida. Yet the songs that John’s wrote aren’t at all operatic. Nor are they steeped in rock Rather, John and Rice have aimed for something much more traditional — an old-fashioned family musical, complete with showstoppers and belted-to-the-chandelier set pieces. On those slim terms, Aida succeeds in much the same way the duo’s slick score for The Lion King did. With a pop-rock score that features stirring ballads and rousing choral numbers, Elton John and Tim Rice’s AIDA is a modern crowd pleaser that embraces multi-cultural casting and exuberant dancing, staging and singing.
