The Auxiliary to J.C. Blair Sponsors 7th Annual Wear Red Luncheon
February is Heart Health Month and The Auxiliary to J.C. Blair is teaming up with J.C. Blair’s Women’s Heart Health Initiative to kick off the month with the seventh annual Wear Red Day Luncheon on Friday, February 7, from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. in Ellis Hall Ballroom at Juniata College. The featured speaker will be Kathaleen Johnson, nurse practitioner at the PinnacleHealth Cardiovascular Institute, Harrisburg. Her presentation is entitled “Coronary Artery Calcium Scoring and Risk Factor Prediction.” The cost is $5, payable at the door. Reservations are required by January 30 by calling (814) 643-8833, as seating is limited.
Doctors are very good at diagnosing heart attacks and angina when they occur, but the majority of heart attacks and almost half of sudden deaths due to coronary artery disease occur in people who have never had any symptoms. If doctors could detect plaque before it causes symptoms, they might be able to start effective treatment in time to prevent damage. Coronary artery calcium scoring is a new screening tool that may be able to provide more accurate results for those who are at risk of heart disease. Patients who may qualify for this new testing include those who have a family history of coronary disease, past or present smokers, diabetics, and individuals with high blood pressure, are overweight, and sedentary in their lifestyles. Johnson will describe this new, non-invasive screening procedure as well as what can be done with the results from the testing.
Johnson earned her doctorate in nursing practice from Robert Morris University and her bachelor’s in nursing and master’s in family nurse practice from Millersville University. She has extensive teaching experience with Penn State’s College of Nursing, Widener University and York College. She has been a critical care nurse, cardiothoracic ICU staff nurse, pulmonary/critical care nurse practitioner, certified legal nurse consultant, and is currently a cardiac nurse practitioner at Pinnacle Health Cardiovascular Institute in Harrisburg.
At PinnacleHealth, Johnson works with a team of multidisciplinary specialists in cardiovascular health. The PinnacleHealth Cardiovascular Institute was recently recognized by the National Society of Thoracic Surgeons as the region's best team of cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, nurses and technologists, all focused on comprehensive patient-focused cardiac care.
Reservations are required to attend the Wear Red Day Luncheon by Thursday, January 30 by calling J.C. Blair’s Community Relations office at (814) 643-8833. Seating is limited and carpooling is recommended.
